Car Braking Systems: Drum Brakes

Brakes are absolutely vital to your safety when you’re driving a car. They need to be properly built, maintained, and designed. There are two major types of braking systems: drum brakes, and disc brakes. Each works slightly differently to stop your vehicle when you need it stopped.

Both disc and drum brakes have the potential to suffer from brake fade, an issue that can cause your vehicle to lose braking power when you need it most. If you’ve been in an accident caused by failed brakes, you may not be responsible. The Milwaukee car accident attorneys of Habush Habush & Rottier, S.C., may be able to help to help you get the compensation you deserve following such an event. Drum Brakes

Drum brakes are the older form of automobile brakes, found mostly on older cars and smaller, economy vehicles. Drum brakes utilize a friction pad called a shoe which presses against the inner part of the wheel to slow its spinning. This form of brake has an advantage, in that the design causes the shoe to naturally tighten around the wheel, increasing braking power without requiring more exertion from the driver.

Unfortunately, drum brakes are more likely than disc brakes to suffer from brake fade, a phenomenon that occurs when brakes are no longer able to successfully dissipate heat. The brakes overheat and fail, causing you to be unable to control the braking system.

Many economy cars continue to be fitted with drum brakes, as they are less expensive. Disc brakes work better under these smaller, lighter cars.
