Wisconsin has statewide crackdown on drunken drivers

Police departments across the state of Wisconsin are participating in a campaign called “Drunk Driving — Over the Limit. Under Arrest,” that has been put in place to crackdown on drunken drivers during the Labor Day weekend. The campaign began August 24 and runs through September 6, Labor Day.

The campaign will mean that more patrol officers are on the road and for longer hours in order to keep an extra eye out for impaired drivers on the road. Police Sgt. in Beloit said that Wisconsin has the  highest number of drunken driving in the nation. In 2009, 238 people were killed alcohol-related crashes.

Some think that Wisconsin has the highest rate of drunken driving because first time offenders are not criminalized because it is only seen as a traffic offense.
