Toyota to settles federal investigation by paying $1.2 billion

Automaker giant Toyota will settle a four-year U.S. investigation by paying $1.2 billion after admitting to deliberately concealing knowledge of the unexpected sudden acceleration of some of their vehicles that caused injuries and deaths, Business Week reported on March 19.

The Justice Department stated that Toyota falsely allowed consumers to believe that a defect that caused sudden acceleration has been resolved in 2009. As a result, a criminal charge was filed by federal lawyers against Toyota for misinforming consumers.

The federal investigation, which took four years, concentrated on Toyota’s reporting of the defect.
